Kitulo Plateau National Park
Kitulo plateau was gazetted by the Government of Tanzania as a national park in the year 2002 making the first floristic park in tropical Africa. Perched above 2,600m between the Kipengere Range and the Poroto and Livingstone Mountains, Kitulo covers 273 sq Km of grassland and it is its abundance of flowery plants that has lead to the park being described as “ one of the floral spectacles of the world”.
Locally it is referred to as Bustani ya Mungu (God's Garden) and botanists call it the Serengeti of Flowers. Kitulo Plateau national park contains a lot of endemic flowering plants, including terrestrial orchids and over 350 species of vascular plants.
The plateau is also home to important animal species including national and regional endemics. Breeding colonies of Blue Swallow, Denham's Bustard, Njombe Cisticola, Lesser Kestrel, and Kipengere Seedeater make the plateau a good destination for bird lovers.
